BECOME A U.S. CITIZEN

U.S. citizenship is the ultimate goal for many Vietnamese immigrants after settling in America and holding a powerful Green Card.

WHAT IS NATURALIZATION?

Naturalization is the legal process that allows foreign-born individuals to become official citizens of the United States.

This marks a significant milestone, demonstrating a lifelong commitment and loyalty to the U.S. Constitution. As a U.S. citizen, you will enjoy the full rights and responsibilities of native-born Americans, including the right to vote, U.S. consular protection abroad, and expedited family sponsorship pathways.

BENEFITS OF U.S. CITIZENSHIP VS. PERMANENT RESIDENCY

With a U.S. Green Card, you enjoy nearly all the rights and privileges of a Lawful Permanent Resident. You can live, work, study, or conduct business in any U.S. state without residency restrictions. In addition, Green Card holders are eligible for visa-free entry into Canada under certain current regulations.
However, there are still key distinctions between holding a Green Card and obtaining U.S. citizenship. Upon becoming a U.S. citizen and receiving your Certificate of Naturalization, you gain several exclusive benefits unavailable to permanent residents—such as the right to vote, eligibility for a U.S. passport, and the full rights and protections of a United States citizen.

1. Voting Rights

Green card holders may participate in certain local elections, depending on regional regulations. However, only U.S. citizens have the right to vote in federal elections, including presidential and congressional elections.

2. Eligibility to Run for Public Office

Many government positions require candidates to be U.S. citizens. Once naturalized, you become eligible to run for public office, provided you meet the specific requirements of the position.

3. No More Green Card Renewals

After obtaining citizenship, you will no longer need to worry about renewing or replacing your Green Card, nor will you need to file applications to maintain permanent resident status. This saves time and money while eliminating ongoing administrative procedures

4. Federal Employment Opportunities

Many positions within federal agencies and U.S. government bodies are open exclusively to U.S. citizens. These roles typically offer competitive compensation, stable income, and comprehensive retirement and insurance benefits.

5. No Risk of Losing Residency Status

As a U.S. citizen, you no longer face the risk of losing permanent resident status or facing deportation, which can happen to Green Card holders under certain legal or immigration violations. Denaturalization occurs only under extremely rare circumstances strictly defined by law.

6. Sponsor More Family Members

Compared to permanent residents, U.S. citizens have the right to sponsor a wider range of family members. You can sponsor parents, siblings, adult children, and other eligible family members to live in the United States according to immigration laws.

7. Children Can Acquire U.S. Citizenship

In many cases, children of U.S. citizens may automatically derive or acquire U.S. citizenship—even when born abroad—provided specific requirements under immigration law are met. Following the birth of a child, parents should contact the relevant U.S. Embassy or Consulate to complete the necessary consular procedures.

8. Travel Advantages of a U.S. Passport

The U.S. passport is among the most powerful in the world. U.S. citizens enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries and territories, subject to each country’s entry regulations. Furthermore, in the event of emergencies abroad, you can receive full consular protection and assistance from U.S. Embassies and Consulates.
